REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS Position Reports to: Dean of the College of Optometry (DCO)
POSITION PURPOSE Assistant Dean of Clinical Affairs (ADCA) is the Chief Clinical Officer of the College of Optometry.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Communication a. Provides ongoing communication with constituents, including: b. Applicable policy and procedures of the clinical program and patient care. c. Dissemination of appropriate student-related and patient care-related information.
2. Clinic Development a. Supervises the clinical patient care program so that it fulfills the vision, mission, goals, and objectives of the University and the College of Optometry. b. Develops the clinics to provide competent and compassionate medical and vision care for all patients served by the clinics. c. Assigned the primary role in recruitment, supervision, evaluation, and retention of clinical faculty and staff. d. Oversees the development of the clinical patient care program and the integrated teaching clinic, procedures for evaluating clinic faculty, staff, and administrators, and procedures for evaluating effectiveness of clinical operations. e. Develops a coordinated system of clinical governance, administration, management, and evaluation for all clinics managed by the program. f. Develops methods for performing clinical assessments in determining the success of the clinical training program. g. Maintains clinical supervision of clinical faculty and staff. h. Develops the clinic manual including clinic policies, procedures, and protocols as well as the methods for strategy, implementation, and monitoring. i. Responsible for the continuous quality assessment and improvement in clinical care. j. Supervises the compliance program that provides for remediation when deficiencies are identified within the clinical program. k. Develops written procedures for receiving and resolving patient complaints, grievances and appeals to provide for improvement in the clinical care of patients.
3. Leadership a. Oversees patient care clinics and clinical training programs affiliated with the College of Optometry. b. Develops and administers clinical training within the optometry program. c. Models and promotes the professional behavior expected by the program. d. Employs strategies to promote and support professional development. e. Implements proven effective interpersonal and conflict-management skills. f. Facilitates needed change. g. Demonstrates negotiation and advocacy skills (relative to planning, budgeting, funding, program faculty status, program status, employment and termination, space, and appropriate academic and professional benefits). h. Effectively participates in strategic planning. i. Active in service on behalf of optometry professional education, higher education, the larger community, and organizations related to their academic interest. j. Manages human and fiscal resources. k. Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning. l. Participates actively in institutional governance. m. Promotes and facilitates accomplishment of all program goals and expected outcomes. n. Ensures that all program policies and procedures are followed, reviewed, documented and revised as appropriate. o. Ensures accreditation standards are met or exceeded. p. Participates in student instruction as a faculty member as appropriate. q. Oversees facilitating and assessing the performance, development and other activities of clinical staff.
