The Trauma Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of all services required to meet the individual health needs of admitted trauma patients. This position is also responsible for maintaining data for the Trauma Registry including data abstraction, ICD-10 and Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) coding, software management of Trauma Registry, exporting and importing of data and report writing. Responsible for trauma related performance improvement, education, and outreach as well as being able to synthesize and quantify relevant trauma data for quality improvement.
The Trauma Coordinator applies expertise in trauma and facilitates: multidisciplinary communication and collaboration, quality assessment/audit; and leads/participates in education, data collection/reporting and research. The Trauma Coordinator utilizes available resources to promote quality and cost effective outcomes.
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with a bachelor's degree in nursing preferred
Certification by the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) as Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) Coding Specialist is required within two (2) years. Certification by the American Trauma Society Registrar Certification Board (ATSRCB) as a Trauma Registrar required (within 4 years).
Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) and or Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certifications preferred.
Current License or valid permit to practice professional nursing in Texas
Two (2) or more years critical care and/or emergency department experience
Special Requirements/Principal Accountabilities:
Communication Skills: Above Average Verbal (Heavy Public Speaking/Contact), and Exceptional Writing (Composing/Corresponding reports, letters, etc.)
Prepares data and compiles related reports for performance improvement and reporting requirements
Identifies and Initiates educational opportunities and performance improvement projects related to trauma as needs are identified working with the Trauma Program Director
Other Skills: Knowledge of medical terminology. Ability to read and interpret medical records, lab reports, etc.
Analyzes and reviews patient medical records, abstracts data from various sources and accurately codes and enters data into the trauma registry ensuring accuracy of data to maintain quality control of the trauma program
Collaborate with LBJ's Trauma Service to ensure successful case reviews at the multidisciplinary level to improve quality of trauma care
Accuracy and thoroughness; strong ability to work independently and with a team
Ensures that all required data is submitted to required agencies in a timely manner prior to deadlines set forth by agencies
Adheres to all of Harris Health policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including good time management skills, productivity and accuracy of practice
