 LAB AST 1 (Lab Ast - Swett Lab) Job Summary The primary role (~60% time) of this position is to help manage field projects at the Armstrong plant pathology research station on UC Davis campus. This involves daily plot monitoring, weeding, monitoring for and fixing irrigation leaks, pest monitoring (IPM), and basic pest management. Undergraduate student assistants as well as lab researchers will be available to provide support for large tasks (eg. weeding). Also assist with maintenance of greenhouse studies, including irrigation, pest monitoring, and space management. As a member of the field support team, assist researchers with seeding, inoculating, planting, setting up field plots, data collection, data entry, harvest (~20% time). This may involve driving to off-campus research sites. A secondary role (~20% time) is to help with southern blight and Fusarium soil analysis and isolation and subculture work in the diagnostic lab. There would be opportunity to develop disease diagnosis skills. POSITION INFORMATION PHYSICAL DEMANDS Must have a valid California driver's license by June 1, 2020. Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work in a field setting. Work in a laboratory setting. Work in the greenhouse and field with varying temperatures for extended periods of time. QUALIFICATIONS Required: Some experience with field work and understanding of scientific research. Knowledge of basic sanitary practices in a multi-pathogen environment. Theoretical knowledge of plant sciences, sustainable agriculture, or equivalent experience. Ability to work as part of a team and independently. Skills to assist with isolating and culturing fungal and bacterial samples from diseased plant tissue and enumerating from soil samples. Skills to work under the supervision of the PI, laboratory managers, and/or postdoctoral researchers and independently. Preferred: Coursework or experience in integrated pest management. Coursework or experience in plant pathology. Experience with culture work and methods for isolating pathogens from soil and plants.
