DESCRIPTION

Work collaboratively within a dynamic team environment by providing laboratory and general assistance to research related to genetics and physiology of cyanobacteria. Responsible for facilitating the day-to-day activities of the laboratory by carrying out a variety of tasks.

Perform various standard molecular biology techniques, order supplies and equipment, prepare solutions and growth media, replenish and sterilize lab supplies, provide maintenance of laboratory and equipment, and assist in dishwashing and general cleaning. Fulfill outside requests for biological materials, including submission of material transfer agreement requests, maintain laboratory strain collections of cyanobacteria and Escherichia coli, and provide work direction for undergraduate students.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from high school or a GED and two (2) years of laboratory experience, or two (2) years of college including courses in biology or related field, and one (1) year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Demonstrated experience calculating buffer concentrations, measuring and weighing chemicals, preparing molar and normal solutions and serial dilutions.

• Knowledge in pipetting, using solvents, and preparing simple solutions, handling glassware and plasticware appropriately.

• Knowledge of lab safety requirements, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), hazardous materials disposal, and skill to train others in these procedures/requirements.

• Basic knowledge in molecular biology techniques.

• Skill and knowledge of the operation of standard equipment of the contemporary molecular biology research laboratory.

• Strong organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload, and follow written and oral protocols effectively and with minimal instruction.

• Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with others in a constructive, professional & pleasant manner.

• Thorough knowledge and ability to prepare a variety of complex reagents, media, and buffers.

• Experienced in use of computers and software including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. with a willingness and ability to update and increase computer skills and knowledge as needed.

• Knowledge of and some hands on experience in culturing and archiving photosynthetic microorganisms.

• Demonstrated knowledge and proven experimental ability to perform standard repetitive procedures used in a molecular biology research laboratory setting.

• Responsible, reliable and self motivated with a willingness to learn.

• Ability to proactively and appropriately facilitate the maintenance of all lab supplies and equipment, maintain steady levels of lab supplies & organized purchasing records.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Nights and weekends may be required based on the needs of the lab.
