The Department of Global Health was established in 2007, bridging the schools of Medicine and Public Health, with a mandate to harness the expertise and interdisciplinary power of all UW schools and colleges. This position will sit in the Global Center for the Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents, and Children (Global WACh) that is based in the University of Washington Departments of Global Health, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Pediatrics. The mission of Global WACh is to make scientific discoveries, cultivate leaders, and bridge disciplines to advance the tightly connected health and well-being of women, adolescents and children. Global WACh brings together expertise in maternal health from the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology, neonatal and child health expertise from the Department of Pediatrics, and vast experience working in infectious disease, health metrics and evaluation, education, clinical research, and service delivery within the Department of Global Health. These disciplines combine under a methodology that views women, children, and adolescents as three populations interconnected along a shared life course.
We are seeking a forward-thinking and proactive Research Project Manager to provide project management support to the Enterics for Global Health study. This study falls within Global WACh’s Gut Health and Child Survival (GHCS) team which focuses on targeting interventions and approaches to improve survival, growth, and development among vulnerable children globally, with specific attention to children with enteric and neglected tropical diseases. This position will focus primarily on the Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) study and will also support smaller studies within the Gut Health portfolio.
Project Management & Team Oversight •Manages the workplan working closely with the PI and other EFGH coordination team members. •Works with the PI, funders and larger consortium in defining and managing program/project deliverables. •Manages EFGH coordination team members, assuring appropriate technical expertise is being applied to achieve project deliverables on time, within budget, and at the level of quality required. •Organize and manage team meetings and teleconferences with partners and stakeholders. •Coordinates and attends internal coordination meetings, investigator meetings, domain-specific working groups; takes and distributes minutes and takes ownership on following up on action items. •Maintains ongoing decision/task lists, and directs team members in accomplishment of their duties. •Coordinate ethical review board submissions and track due dates for renewals. •Develop and maintain tracking system for sub-studies and manuscripts and identify working groups to implement as needed. •Coordinate study travel and consortium convenings. •Monitor project progress against adopted plans and GHCS policies and practices, addressing technical, quality and teamwork challenges, as needed, to achieve project goals. •Foster team trust, accountability and the development of team member skills. •Manage and track study supply procurement. •Serve as the point of contact for laboratory and other technical support units. •As needed, represent the PI in meetings with funding agencies or partner organizations.
Budget and Fiscal Management •Manage subawards and maintain a tracking system for study site deliverables. •Manages subcontract budgets with study sites and external partners, in collaboration with the Grant Specialist. •Reviews and approves monthly field expense reports, in collaboration with the Grant Specialist. •Reports quarterly to the PI on study expenditures.
Communication and Reporting •Regularly communicate project updates to EFGH team members, funders, scientific advisory committee through monthly, quarterly and annual meetings and written reports and concept notes. •Maintain the team’s shared folders, calendar and other information management tools. •Maintain the consortium website and provide content for blogs, newsletters and social media. •Enable and assist project knowledge management and dissemination. •Lead monthly and quarterly report writing as well as technical responses to the donor with input from the PI.
Supervision •Supervise 2-3 study staff or student employees.
Other duties •Contribute to the overall functioning of the GHCS team, including coordinating specific activities as assigned. •Participate in GHCS and Global WACh meetings with other PIs, Program Managers, Study Coordinators, and Data Managers to promote knowledge sharing and learning across project and country teams.
REQUIREMENTS: •Master’s Degree in Public Health, Public Policy or related field •3 years of relevant work experience managing large scale international clinical trials or observational studies. •Project management skills and experience with a proven track record of meeting milestones and timelines. •Self-motivated, resourceful with strong organizational skills and able to multi-task and work collaboratively in large, complex, multi-departmental, cross-functional teams. •Diplomatic skills, excellent judgment, proven ability to communicate effectively and present site performance and contract research organization performance for internal review. •Experience leading and implementing operations research and/or clinical research in resource-limited settings. •Experience training and managing a study team and/or providing mentoring and supportive supervision. •Knowledgeable about research ethics and institutional review board requirements in US-based academic and international settings. •Experience with complex, multi-faceted projects. •Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication between professionals with a variety of cultural backgrounds in a respectful and diplomatic manner and enhance effective partnerships. •Ability to travel up to 25% (pending COVID-19 restrictions)
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE •5 years of project management experience, certification or coursework in project management •Masters degree in Public Health, Public Policy or other related field •Thrives in a fast paced environment •Excellent writing and communication skills •Excellent judgment and interpersonal skills with proven ability in effective cross-cultural communication •Experience or interest in global health, nutrition, enteric diseases and/or child survival •Ability to travel internationally up to 25% of the time (when COVID restrictions are lifted)
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: This full-time 100% position is based at the Hans Rosling Center at the UW in Seattle. This position requires up to 25% international travel (travel is currently on hold due to COVID restrictions). Travelers must be prepared to follow the UW and US government recommended precautions and prophylaxis for travel safety and disease prevention. This position requires frequent participation in early morning and late evening telephone conference calls in order to accommodate time zone differences between Seattle and its country project sites.
