ResponsibilitiesIn 2003, the CHARGE (Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment) Study began enrolling three groups of children aged 2-5 years: with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); with other (not ASD) developmental delays (DD); and from the general population with typical development (TD). CHARGE has generated a body of new results on pre-natal exposures, such as pesticides, air pollution, medications, and maternal nutrition, in relation to ASD and DD. For the
ECHO/ReCHARGE program, CHARGE children from all three diagnostic groups will be followed up at ages 8-12 or, for those now older, ages 15-19, to understand developmental trajectories for each of these three groups (baseline DD, ASD, or TD at baseline). Outcomes of interest will be longitudinal change in diagnoses, cognitive and adaptive function, and symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety or depression.
Under supervision of the Project Manager and Research Lab Supervisor, incumbent will work closely with the study staff and student interns by supporting the day-to-day functions of the medical record abstraction team and perform clinical research duties for ECHO/ReCHARGE study funded by the National Institutes of Health. This position will assist in the collection/abstraction of a wide variety of clinical research data and follow-up with various medical records departments. Additionally, this position is responsible for developing and overseeing QA/QC procedures with strict adherence to IRB and HIPAA policies and procedures. The incumbent will also be responsible for recruitment and data collection of clinical research participants. Functions include schedule research visits, administer and score measures, complete follow up on missing data and specimens, and data entry. The incumbent will train and oversee the work of student assistants and junior specialists. Other job duties include development and pilot testing of data collection instruments and maintaining procedure manuals. This candidate will work closely with all study staff, including principal investigators, study coordinators, student interns, and laboratory personnel. The primary work location is based on the Davis Campus, but the position will be required to perform duties at the MIND Institute in Sacramento as well on a regular basis.
Required Qualifications - Demonstrated experience in research with human subjects or medical/science related field
- Experience in collecting and handling confidential data and/or health information.
- Working knowledge of the applicable medical terminology, and one-year of applicable medical clerical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
- In-depth understanding of the meaning and organization of patient records. Knowledge of, and experience with medical records. Ability to analyze, evaluate, and abstract participants' records. Ability to determine if records meet study protocol requirements, and if not, how to proceed to obtain the information needed.
- Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and follow rigorous protocols in the most efficient manner to meet deadlines; and to know when to refer matters to supervisor.
- Must be able to communicate, throughout the day, in person, by telephone, and via typed word, working in an area with constant activity and facing various deadlines. Must accurately follow written instructions and complete various reporting forms; must be able to legibly enter information in small spaces on pre-printed forms; must be able to complete errands.
- Excellent communication skills required to communicate tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally with a wide variety of people/agencies, including but not limited to staff, supervisory persons and study participants.
- Demonstrated computer skills and experience, and the ability to learn project-specific software.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and trouble-shoot.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and incorporate new information, directives, expectations and requirements.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds. Frequent bending and twisting. Ability to kneel on the floor and get up and down with ease.
- Willingness to work evenings, nights, and/or weekends when required.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
Special Requirements - Occasional overtime and evening and/or weekend shifts
- IRB and HIPAA certification must be completed once hired
- California Driver's License
- Must participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program
- Ability to lift 25 pounds. Frequent bending and twisting. Ability to kneel on the floor and get up and down with ease

- Local travel required to collect biological samples
