Originally founded in 1997, the Baskin School of Engineering is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. Over the past 20 years, Baskin Engineering has become a unique 21st century school of engineering and technology, characterized by evolutionary growth fueled by on-going research opportunities that open new areas of intellectual inquiry. Baskin Engineering has grown to include six academic departments, a variety of research centers and institutes, and has ambitious plans for further programmatic growth. The focus of Baskin Engineering educational programming is to instill strong basic knowledge for sound practice in science and ethical engineering for the well-being of society, and its diverse curricula facilitate creative thinking and prepares students for productive and rewarding careers. The Baskin Engineering Lab Support (BELS) group operates and supports all specialized teaching labs in Baskin Engineering. BELS is also the hardware engineering, embedded software engineering and technical support services for Baskin Engineering and at times serves the University of California, Santa Cruz globally. BELS schedules services and operates the specialized undergraduate engineering teaching labs at Baskin Engineering and partners with UCSC Information Technology Services (ITS) Instructional technologies group on the use of campus general computing labs. BELS instructional labs are primarily located in the Baskin Engineering and Engineering 2 buildings, but at times BELS supports instructional requirements at the UCSC Silicon Valley Campus and research requirements at other main campus buildings and locations such as 2300 Delaware Westside Research Park (WRP). BELS also provides technical advice, design, fabrication, poster printing, 3D-printing services and equipment rentals to undergraduate students, graduate students, researchers and faculty BELS operates the Baskin Engineering receiving services and serves as the inventorial equipment manager to Baskin Engineering. BELS provides support for audio-visual equipment in the Baskin Engineering events center rooms and partners with ITS Local IT Specialists (Baskin Engineering LITS) on supporting computing and conference room audio-visual equipment support.

80% - Instructional Lab Support
Develop and update instructional lab kit listings, source and acquire lab supplies, assemble kits, distribute course supplies to students, coordinate lending of equipment to students, and assist with the return of equipment.
Reconcile equipment lending and produce reports.
Respond to lab maintenance requests from faculty, teaching assistants, tutors, and students. This includes lab cleanings and cleanups as necessary and as requested by the Baskin Engineering Lab Support (BELS) manager.
Maintain and update parts stockroom stock and inventory. Assist students and faculty with sourcing materials from the Baskin Engineering Lab Support (BELS) stockroom and other outside suppliers.
Respond to requests, maintain supplies and conduct maintenance on specialized hardware such as poster printers, 3D printers, laser cutters, circuit board milling/routing machines and other systems. This will require the initiative to learn these systems thoroughly and develop operating procedures and preventative maintenance processes and schedules.
Assist Baskin Engineering receiving personnel with receiving and shipping of materials. At times this means filling in for the Baskin Engineering receiving clerk when they are absent.
Create master images for Windows PCs and distribute as needed. Install and update software as well as troubleshoot software or hardware issues on these Windows PCs as necessary.
Move and secure test and measurement equipment as needed.
Verify operability, troubleshoot, and repair problems with multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators and other test equipment.
Provide basic level training on the use of multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators and other test equipment to teaching assistants and undergraduate students.
Provide AutoCAD and SolidWorks drawing capabilities for University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) projects. Support training of student staff in learning these applications.
Advise and provide design/fabrication services to research labs via recharge reimbursement as time permits. Provide financial oversight of recharge operation.
Under general supervision, designs and prepares engineering plans and specifications of moderate complexity for novel laboratory equipment and instruments.
10% - Laboratory Safety, Ergonomics, and Hazardous Materials Program
Develop and write standard operating procedures for lab equipment.
Train students, staff and faculty on the safe use of fabrication equipment such as soldering irons, printed circuit board routers, drill presses, and laser cutters.
Collect and verify training documentation.
Source, purchase, maintain and update fabrication equipment to current safety best practices.
10% - AV Support for Baskin Engineering Events Spaces
Source, purchase and install media equipment such as projectors, speakers, TVs, microphones, and cameras.
Operate, troubleshoot, repair, and provide preventative maintenance on installed AV systems.
Provide all necessary support to users of Baskin Engineering event spaces on the operation of installed AV systems.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to perform professional engineering design work independently.
Able to independently learn new technical and procedural information from a wide variety of sources, and without formal training.
Demonstrated experience working on multiple open-ended projects concurrently with minimum guidance from supervisors.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy and flexibility to work effectively with a diverse population of widely varying cultures, backgrounds and technical skills, including experience communicating technical concepts and operations to non-technical people.
Demonstrated strong attention to detail.
Proficiency in operating, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining lab benchtop test and measurement equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, powers supplies, etc.
Proficiency in soldering circuit boards to include surface mount soldering techniques.
Experience designing and building electronic circuitry, printed circuit boards and mechanical assemblies for a variety of analog and digital designs.
Experience installing, configuring, upgrading, troubleshooting and remediating issues on Windows systems.
Proficiency in writing computer programs in at least one major computer programming language such as Java, C, C++, C#, or Python.
Experience using 2D and/or 3D CAD programs such as AutoCAD, Solidworks, Inventor or other similar applications.
Experience using and programming microcontrollers such as Arduino or Microchip PIC series MCUs and/or System on a Chip devices such as Cypress Semi PSoC boards or other similar devices.
Experience operating, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining various AV hardware.
Experience using a ticketing system to report, track, document issues and resolution actions.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
