Each residential college at UC Santa Cruz employs a team of academic advisors who work with students through the entirety of their undergraduate career. College academic advising serves as the generalist branch of advising at UC Santa Cruz, focusing on all career-based requirements (general education, university, college requirements) and applying academic senate policy including academic standing, progress, and time-to-degree. College Advising works collaboratively with others at the college to ensure a coordinated approach to serving students' academic, residential, and developmental needs, and works collaboratively with academic advisors in the academic departments and with other advisors on campus. The primary mission of college advising is to assist students in identifying and clarifying their academic directions and educational goals, and to help them to develop meaningful and compatible plans and success strategies.
Applies professional concepts and provides advice on academic policies and procedures for an academic college including general education, university, and college requirements, and all aspects of course requirements for degree or program completion. Receives assistance on more complex issues.

15% - Monitors and evaluates students' completion of academic requirements.
15% - Applies professional concepts to independently provide prescriptive advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress and major requirements for the department / school / college.
15% - Assists students in determining a major, alternative academic options, scheduling conflicts, and similar issues.
15% - Communicates and exchanges information with other units of the organization and makes referrals to help students with their academic program (e.g., health service, disabled students program, Colleges / Schools, transfer center, academic departments, graduate division, etc.)
10% - Identifies student needs for programs and services.
10% - Refers students to non-academic resources as appropriate.
10% - Advises on moderately complex issues such as multiple degrees, or withdrawal from the University.
5% - Advises department on scheduling needs for student course progression and requirements completion.
5% - Provides information to students on programs with special, clearly articulated eligibility requirements such as honors programs, awards, fellowships, scholarships, and advanced level courses.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Ability to build a thorough knowledge of college / university policies, procedures, and requirements.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
Ability to effectively interact with students, faculty, staff, and parents of diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds, and an understanding of the challenges faced by diverse student populations (including but not limited to first generation students, underrepresented minority students, students with disabilities, low-income students, LGBT students, non-traditional students, veterans) in higher education.
Demonstrated ability as an effective team member, and the ability to exercise flexibility in a changing work environment.
Related advising experience in a university setting.
Ability to build knowledge of multiple majors, minors, and academic enrichment opportunities.
Ability to multi-task.
Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs, and ability to learn new systems.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
