CARPENTER, MAINTENANCE AND MUSEUM

Department/Program Description: The integration of the practical knowledge of theater-making with the humanistic knowledge of the history and theory of performance is central to the vision of the Theater & Performance Studies Department (TAPS) at Stanford. At TAPS, theory and practice are inextricably linked and mutually reinforcing. We prepare our students to become scholar-artists fluent in both of these languages. If the idea of the scholar-artist is at the core of our department's vision, then teaching is at the center of our mission. We teach graduate and undergraduate students in academic classes and seminars, in acting and dance studios, and by mentoring them in their creative work and scholarly research. Creating the context for probing dialogues and participatory experiences in our classes is essential to guiding students into discoveries of how the performing arts can be utilized as a fresh platform for illuminating pressing social issues and paths of change.
Position Summary: Stanford University Department of Theater and Performance Studies (TAPS) is seeking a Head Carpenter to join the TAPS technical theater production team and provide expertise in carpentry and scenic construction. The Carpenter will work with the Technical Director and Lead Carpenter to ensure successful engineering, realization, and safety of all scenic, lighting, props, sound, video, rigging and automation needs. This collaborative position will interact with professional and student designers, faculty, staff and both graduate and undergraduate students and needs to be a team player dedicated to safety. Experience with scenic painting, Vectorworks, audio/video/projection, and other theatrical technologies is not a requirement but will be taken into consideration. Other duties may also be assigned. The work schedule includes evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
This is a 100% FTE, continuing bargaining unit position reporting to the Technical Director. This position will be based on the Stanford campus.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working under general supervision, employees in this classification perform skilled carpentry work at the journey level in the construction, maintenance, and repair of structures, equipment and fixtures.
Work is assigned by the supervisor or lead, and carried out by the carpenter
independently, selecting methods most suitable for the job. Work is spot-checked for quality during progress and upon completion.
CORE DUTIES:

*Working from blueprints, sketches, drawings, either provided or produced, and oral or written instructions, construct maintain and/or repair structural woodwork such as: repair and install counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, stairs, ladders, building framework, roof structures, floor and ceiling tile, paneling.
*Fit and install windows, doors, door frames, etc.
*Select and install various sound insulation materials.
*Lay out work as required.
*Select specified type of lumber or other material.
*Shape materials to prescribed measurements to walls and ceilings
*Construct concrete forms and pouring chutes; may do some concrete finishing.
*Answer emergency calls to make minor repairs to locks, remove broken keys, etc.
*Install or replace various kinds of building hardware, such as door closers, antipanic hardware, hinges, lock sets, etc.
*Keep tools and machinery of the trade in good condition.
*Repair or replace chalkboards and bulletin boards.
*May perform specialized duties such as building or repairing unusual customized items.
*Adhere to safety rules.
This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
*Must have sufficient experience to qualify as a journey level carpenter, with approximately four years of actual work at the trade. This may include time spent in apprenticeship or in vocational training or a combination of equivalent education and work experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
*Must be skilled in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment of the carpentry trade
*Must be knowledgeable of applicable Environmental Health & Safety and OSHA rules, regulations and requirements.
*Demonstrated ability to operate woodworking machinery such as sanders, planers, lathes, power saws, and joiners, and specialized instruments such as a surveyor's transit, etc.
*Ability to sketch
*Working knowledge of relevant building codes.
*Demonstrated strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
CERTIFICATES & LICENSES REQUIRED:
*Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Non-commercial Driver's License.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
*May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including Holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
*Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

*When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.

The expected pay range for this position is $45.64 (Step 1) to $55.19 (Step 10) per hour.Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
