Departmental Overview
The Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (MVZ) at the University of California, Berkeley, is a center for research and education in the biology of vertebrates-fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Founded in 1908, the Museum's mission to document and increase understanding of the diversity of vertebrates, with particular emphasis on western North America, continues to today. The superb collections are at the heart of the MVZ, where field studies are combined with modern laboratory techniques and analytical methods in a comprehensive, synthetic approach. Our goals are to remain at the forefront of international research on evolutionary biology from the perspectives of systematics, ecology, behavior, functional and developmental morphology, population biology, and genomics, and to lead the way in using natural history collections for research, education, and solving problems in biodiversity conservation.
Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to assist in the management of fish specimens of the MVZ, and may include data management and updating, geo-referencing, inventory of specimens, associated media and/or tissues.

Responsibilities
Assist with specimen preparation, organization, inventory.
Update curatorial records (e.g. spreadsheets, Arctos).
Assist with loans and specimens requests for researchers.
Organize and rehouse specimens.
Re-ethanol and put away specimens.
Assist with other collection management tasks as needed.
Required Qualifications
Working knowledge of Excel and Google Sheets.
Experience with the student-level maintenance of Arctos collection management system.
Familiarity with current MVZ curatorial practices.
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted hourly rate that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $25.00. Your total starting salary will be $25.00 per hour. This includes an appointment at step 5, with a base rate of $23.96 per hour, plus an additional $1.04 per hour to reach your total starting salary of $25.00 per hour.
This is a non-exempt, biweekly-paid position.

This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Technical Unit (TX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE).
