PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION The Head Softball Coach will continue to be responsible for building and maintaining a program respected for its commitment to the mission and core values of St. Edward's University and will represent the program in accordance with Lone Star Conference, NCAA and institutional rules and regulations.
The Head Softball coach will assist the university in achieving its mission and the athletic department’s goals by professionally managing the women’s softball program. The goals are to 1) provide every opportunity for the softball program to complete for the Lone Star Conference Championship and reach the NCAA tournament each year while maintaining a focus on the student-athlete experience and welfare, 2) operate with quality and integrity in the athletic department’s role as a focal point for school identity and spirit, 3) support the community through public service, 4) provide opportunities and support for student athletes to achieve the highest levels of academic and athletic performance, 5) provide programming and resources that help prepare student-athletes with skills for life.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Primary •Provide vision and leadership in the administration of a competitive and inclusive Division II Softball program within the rules, guidelines and principles of the university, Lone Star Conference and NCAA. •Prepare, schedule and organize daily practice sessions, preparation for competition and off-season training •Oversee the holistic development and monitor the well-being of the student athletes. •In conjunction with Athletics administration, schedule competitions appropriate for the team and budget, in accordance with the academic schedule. •Create and sustain an atmosphere that promotes the academic and personal growth of student-athletes. •Monitor academic progress and ensure student-athletes remain eligible to mee graduation standards. •Create and execute a comprehensive recruiting/retention program to attract and retain a diverse, talented pool of prospective student athletes. •Ensuring the softball program meets annual squad-size requirements. •Responsibly expend allocated budget and ensure that the budget balances each fiscal year. •Participate in fundraising initiatives for the Athletic Department to ensure that program fundraising goals are being met. •Consistently and frequently prioritize professional development for personal growth, as well as assistant coaches. •Execute all responsibilities as head coach in a manner that reflects an ongoing commitment to the excellence, integrity and success of the softball program, the Department of Athletics and St. Edward’s University •Engage in community outreach and alumni engagement initiatives •Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletic and/or the Assistant AD for Internal Operations.
QUALIFICATIONS •A Baccalaureate degree is required, with a Master’s degree preferred. •Three to five years of head coaching experience or four years of assistant coaching experience in an intercollegiate environment. •Knowledge of and experience in recruiting. •Demonstrated record of promoting the academic and athletic success of student-athletes. •Ability to motivate student-athletes to be successful students, athletes, and citizens. •Evidence of working and relating effectively with student-athletes of diverse races and cultures. •Evidence of complying fully with NCAA regulations. •Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication, as well as strong administrative and organizational skills. •Possession of a valid, unencumbered driver’s license and the ability to travel both locally and nationally. •Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal background check is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS The individual holding this position must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet the needs of the department. Practice and games take place outdoors and weather conditions will vary.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The expectations listed below represent the abilities that may be needed to fulfill the essential functions of this position. Physical strength/endurance to will allow him/her to perform/participate in the following activities: •Physically able to demonstrate softball techniques. •While performing required job tasks, physically able to remain standing for up to or more than 50% of the time. •While performing required job tasks, physically able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously. •While performing required job tasks, physically able to remain seated frequently to continuously. •Physically able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis. •Possesses the dexterity required to operate a computer and other office equipment to perform job responsibilities.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES As head coach, you will be required to supervise an assistant coach, volunteer coach(es) and student managers/workers.
EXPECTATIONS •Understanding of St. Edward’s University’s mission and goals is essential. •Knowledge of NCAA Division II and Lone Star Conference rules and regulations. •Highly effective verbal and written communication skills. •Excellent interpersonal skills, including collaboration, relationship building, and the ability to respond positively and flexibly when working with all levels in the organization and with outside parties. •Agility to work with student-athletes and coaches, and comfort speaking to groups of various sizes. •Ability and desire to be a strong team player and develop team dynamics within the athletic staff. •Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite software programs. •Ability to quickly learn new technology and remain current with emerging technologies. •Strong organizational and time-management skills. •Ability to balance priorities, manage competing demands, and shift quickly between tasks without loss of continuity. •Ability to adapt to change in the work environment, including frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events. •Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making while maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of data. •Ability to edit work for spelling and grammar, present numerical data effectively, and interpret written information with accuracy and attention to detail. •Ability to carry out all responsibilities and objectives in a professional manner. •Ability to accept supervision, assignments, feedback, and correction; proven effectiveness working with a wide range of professionals, staff, and administrators. •Ability to adhere to the policies and procedures established by St. Edward’s University. •Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with individuals of diverse cultures and backgrounds in alignment with the Holy Cross Mission. •Desire to engage in meaningful and intentional professional development and participate in personal and campus well-being initiatives. •Working weekends and evenings is required; this position requires non-traditional hours.
