The Upper Campus of Sierra Canyon seeks a dynamic and experienced History teacher for the 2026-27 school year. The ideal candidate will possess advanced knowledge of their discipline, and a passion for historical study. Candidates should demonstrate abilities to develop students’ historical thinking skills, foster students’ development as informed and ethical citizens of the world, collaborate effectively with colleagues, and teach research and writing skills.
Successful candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in history, with an advanced degree and experience of teaching in independent schools. The strongest applicants will have experience teaching AP classes (United States, European and World History, Micro and Macro Economics, or United States Government), and/or experience teaching middle school classes.
Full-time teachers at Sierra Canyon are responsible for five class sections, a grade level advisory, and supporting community activities throughout the year. Classes meet four times a week in an eight-day rotating schedule.
Job Qualifications:
Education: BA in History Required, MA or Ph.D in History preferred.
Experience: 2-3 years of teaching in independent schools, with experience teaching AP classes and/or middle school classes preferred.
Professional Expectations:
Collaboratively designing curriculum and aligning curriculum with course team teachers
Help department chair meet the department goals and the school's mission
Design skills-based formative and summative assessments which accurately reflect mastery of content knowledge and skill
Grade student work and provide feedback in a timely manner
Update course assignments, test/quiz information, and homework regularly through learning management system (BlackBaud) to provide studens with due dates and supplemental material.
Communicate regularly with students, parents, and guardians regarding student progress.
Attend weekly faculty meetings on Wednesday afternoons
Develop and enrich professional skills and knowledge by attending seminars, conferences, or school visits for professional development
Sierra Canyon School is a nonprofit independent, nondenominational, coeducational day school in the northern San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. With an enrollment of 1,150 students in grades PK-12, admission is selective. Sierra Canyon School is located on 42 beautiful, rustic acres and has two campuses across the street from each other: the Lower Campus for students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Six and the state-of-the-art Upper Campus for students in grades Seven through Twelve. Students of color comprise over 50% of the student body, 10% are international students, and students reside in 102 different zip codes. There are roughly 500 students on the Lower Campus and 670 students on the Upper Campus with 134 students in the Class of 2026.
