Charles Wright Academy (CWA) is a co-educational, non-religious, independent school located in University Place, WA. Charles Wright Academy is located on a beautiful, green, and sprawling 107-acre campus that includes athletic fields and more than 60 acres of gorgeous Pacific Northwest forests that also serve as an extension of our proper academic campus. Position Summary
Charles Wright Academy seeks a compassionate, organized, and student-centered School Nurse to support the health, safety, and well-being of students in Preschool through Grade 12. The School Nurse promotes a healthy school environment, provides direct nursing care, manages student health plans, supports compliance with Washington State laws and regulations, and serves as a key liaison among families, faculty, administrators, and healthcare providers.
This position requires sound clinical judgment, strong communication skills, discretion, and the ability to work effectively with students across all age groups in a dynamic independent school setting.
Essential Responsibilities
Student Health Services
Provide direct nursing care using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, established protocols, and Individual Health Plans (IHPs).
Maintain first aid equipment to be used in classrooms and field trips, as well as specialty first aid equipment such as EpiPens.
Provide nursing assessment, first aid, triage, and care for illness, injury, and medical emergencies during the school day.
Assess students for exclusion or return to school based on symptoms, communicable disease guidance, and school policy.
Maintain a safe, welcoming, and responsive health office environment.
Monitor students with chronic health conditions, including, but not limited to, diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, severe allergies, and mental health needs.
Medication Administration & Care Plans
Maintain and implement school health policies in order to protect the health and safety of students and staff and to comply with Washington State and health mandates.
Administer medications in accordance with physician orders, parent authorization, school policy, and Washington State law.
Develop, implement, and monitor Individual Health Plans (IHPs), Emergency Care Plans (ECPs), and medication plans.
Coordinate care for students requiring emergency medications such as epinephrine, inhalers, seizure rescue medications, and diabetes management supplies.
Prepare medications, documentation and health plans for field trips, athletics, co-curricular activities and overnight school events.
Support health and safety preparation of school-sponsored wilderness and international trips, including immunization guidance, individualized care planning, and emergency support.
Maintain accurate medication storage, inventory, and documentation.
Health Compliance & Records
Maintain student health records in compliance with FERPA, HIPAA as applicable, and Washington State requirements.
Monitor immunization records, exclusions, and compliance with state regulations.
Track incidents, injuries, communicable illness trends, and required reports.
Support school compliance related to student health, safety, and nursing services.
Collaboration & Communication
Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student illness, injury, treatment, or health concerns.
Collaborate with division leaders, faculty, counselors, athletics staff, and administrators regarding student health needs.
Coordinate with outside medical providers when authorized.
Participate in student support meetings and crisis response planning as needed.
Participate in classroom health education activities when requested by administration and instructional staff.
Fulfill mandated reporter responsibilities, including assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse or neglect.
Health Education & Prevention
Promote wellness, injury prevention, communicable disease mitigation, and healthy school practices.
Provide staff training related to medication administration, emergency response, allergies, diabetes, seizure response, CPR/AED awareness, and student health needs as assigned.
Assist with the development and review of health-related policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Required
Current Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
Minimum of three years of nursing experience in pediatrics, public health, emergency care, school nursing, or related field.
Knowledge of Washington State school health regulations and best practices.
Strong organizational, technology, and documentation skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with children and adults.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
Preferred
ESA School Nurse certification or eligibility.
Certified School Nurse (CSN)
Familiarity with wilderness and/or travel medicine to support experiential education offerings.
Prior school nursing experience, preferably in an independent or Preschool–12 setting.
Experience managing diabetes, seizure disorders, allergies, and student mental health concerns.
Familiarity with electronic health records and student information systems.
Schedule & Status
12 month position; .7-1.0 FTE
$75,000-95,000 annual salary
Regular on-campus presence during school days; schedule to be determined based on school needs.
Occasional attendance at trainings, special events, or emergency response planning meetings may be required.
Salary & Benefits
This position has an annual salary range between $75,000 and $95,000, depending on qualifications and experience. Benefits available are subject to plan and candidate eligibility.
Insurance: Medical, Vision, Dental; Basic Life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment, and Long Term Disability; Health Care FSA; and Dependent Care FSA may be available to employees, subject to the terms of the applicable benefit plan.
Retirement Plan: CWA offers an employer and employee contributed 403(b) plan, subject to the terms of the applicable benefit plan.
Paid Sick Leave: Full-time 12 month employees receive 96 hours of paid sick/wellness leave per year.
Vacation Time: Employees will receive 18 days of vacation leave per year.
Paid Holidays: CWA offers 15 paid holidays per year.
