Position Description
The University of California, Irvine Division of Hospital Medicine and Palliative Medicine is recruiting two full-time Academic Palliative Medicine Physicians to join a growing, mission-driven faculty of more than 40 physicians across Internal Medicine, Palliative Medicine, Infectious Disease, and Family Practice.

We seek clinically excellent, academically engaged physicians at all levels of experience who thrive in an academic hospital environment and are eager to contribute to scholarship, teaching, and health system improvement while delivering outstanding care to seriously ill patients and their families.

Faculty in this role will provide specialty palliative care services across UC Irvine Health sites, working closely with interdisciplinary colleagues to support patients and families facing serious illness through expert symptom management, serious illness communication, and complex decision-making aligned with patient values, goals, and needs.

Clinical and Academic Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include delivery of specialty palliative care in inpatient and outpatient settings, depending on program needs and mutual interest. Clinical teaching is required.

The inpatient palliative care consultation service is well established and highly regarded across the health system, with active collaboration with multiple medical and specialty intensive care units. Faculty work closely with critical care, oncology, surgical, and medical teams to support patients with complex needs through shared decision-making, symptom management, and coordinated care.

The division also supports multiple outpatient palliative care clinics, including embedded palliative care within oncology supportive care, allowing for longitudinal care and close partnership with disease-directed treatment teams.

Call responsibilities are shared equitably among faculty and structured to support sustainability, clinical excellence, and faculty well-being.
In addition to core responsibilities, faculty are expected to contribute across the core clinical and educational missions, with individual emphasis shaped by program needs and faculty interests.

Who We Are Looking For
Required Qualifications

-MD or DO

-Board certified or board eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine

-Eligibility for UC Irvine Health medical staff privileges

-Demonstrated excellence in inpatient palliative care and serious illness communication

-Commitment to clinical teaching, mentorship, and scholarly contribution

-Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams

Preferred or Desirable Qualifications (optional)

-Track record of excellence in clinical care, medical education, or systems-based scholarship

-Experience working with medically and socially complex patient populations

-Interest or experience in quality, safety, education, research, innovation, or operational leadership

-Strong communication skills, including empathy, humility, and respect for differing viewpoints

-Bilingual proficiency relevant to the needs of the diverse patient populations served across UC Irvine Health, valued but not required
