JOB DESCRIPTION

MYP DESIGN TEACHER - MIDDLE SCHOOL

Reports to:  Head of Middle School 

Status:  Full-time, salaried, exempt, 10-month position 

Purpose:  To design, develop, and implement an Innovation and Design curriculum for students in grades 6 - 7. Rooted in Design Thinking, MYP Design is one of the eight core subject groups in the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme.

MYP Design aims to encourage and enable students to:

• Develop interdisciplinary knowledge, understanding, and skills to design and create innovative solutions
• Use technology purposefully to access, process, and communicate information, as well as to model and produce solutions
• Explore and evaluate the impact of design innovations on individuals, global society, and the environment
• Investigate past, present, and emerging design within diverse cultural, social, political, and environmental contexts
• Value multiple perspectives and thoughtfully consider alternative solutions
• Act with integrity and take responsibility for their decisions while developing effective and professional working practices

Duties:

• Develop and implement the MYP Design curriculum for students in grades 6 - 7
• Plan and facilitate project-based learning experiences grounded in inquiry and real-world problem-solving
• Work collaboratively with the Design Center team and the Technology and Innovation team in the integration of innovative applications and tools
• Stay current on innovative technology and pedagogy through conferences, outside collaboration, etc.
• Participate in Middle School grade-level planning meetings
• Perform other duties assigned by the Head of Middle School
• Support the School and its leadership

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the area of educational technology, innovation, or a similar field
• Minimum three years of classroom experience, preferably in a 6-8 school environment
• International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) experience preferred
• An understanding of key learning theories and methods of instruction, and their relation to educational technology
• A growth mindset and willingness to stay fresh and innovative
• Familiarity with educational practices specific to Middle School students
• Ability to work collaboratively in designing and implementing curriculum
• Outstanding interpersonal skills with a strong customer service focus, both internal and external.
• Strong written and oral communication skills with an ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders of the school.
• Highly organized with a strong attention to detail.
• Able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
• High energy, self-starter with the ability to successfully prioritize and multitask in an atmosphere in which sensitive deadlines are the norm, as are interruptions

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in Google Workspace for Education
• Strong troubleshooting skills to solve basic technical problems
• Experience with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop preferred
• Experience with digital fabrication tools (3D printers, laser cutters, etc.)
• Experience working with multiple technology platforms (PC, Mac, iPad, mobile, etc.)
• Experience with various design tools and programming languages (Tinkercad, Fusion 360, Lego Robotics, Scratch, Java, etc.)
• Interest and aptitude for basic engineering, including skills in low-technology areas with a variety of tools
