GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY
TheUpper Elementary Guide prepares the classroom environment for students and directs their academic, social, emotional, and physical activities in a prepared Montessori and IB environment that challenges each student to reach their full potential.
JOB SCOPE
This position follows Montessori and IB philosophy, fostering respect, responsibility, and resourcefulness, and encouraging curiosity and innovative thinking as outlined in the staff handbook. The Upper Elementary guide collaborates with an Academic Coach to support students’ academic, social, and personal growth. This position will also be required to observe and assess students’ individual needs and establish open communication with parents, the Director of Upper Elementary, and/or the Learning Support team as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Implements all curricula in the classroom within the framework of Montessori and IB, focusing on the needs of each student, in collaboration with the Upper Elementary Academic Coach
Keeps records of all parent communications and reports the same to the Director of Upper Elementary
Maintains updated records of each student’s progress for the subjects taught in the online record-keeping program and submits weekly lesson plans to the Director of Upper Elementary
Maintains an organized classroom
Maintains classroom budget
Updates classroom webpage as required
Supervises students and ensures hand-offs to approved adults in compliance with each student’s Pick-Up Authorization Forms
Participate in parent education events such as Observation and Chat, Learn How We Learn, Open House, etc.
Works cooperatively with classroom Academic Coaches, Instructional Technology Specialists, Specialty guides, and Student Support, and/ or administrative team as necessary
Works cooperatively with Student Support staff to schedule group or individual sessions
Prepares and submits required reports, including conference reports, and conducts conferences with the parents
Conducts scheduled and unscheduled meetings with individual parents/guardians as necessary
Prepares 5th-level students for the Fall semester and 6th-level students for the Spring semester student-led conference in collaboration with the Director of Upper Elementary
Reports all accidents/incidents at once. Completes Incident Reports and delivers copies of the same to the parent, the Director of Upper Elementary, and the School Nurse
Participates in the planning and execution of Upper Elementary campout and 6th-level student trip in collaboration with the Outdoor Education Coordinator and the Director of Upper Elementary
Guides and prepares students on research skills, working with them through their science expo, and 6th-level students' research presentations, as required
Plans and prepares for field trips, going outs, and/or community service activities based on the needs of the students in collaboration with the Upper Elementary Academic Coach
Guides Room parents in submitting all required documentation to qualify to drive students for field trips
Participates in regular evaluation process, including classroom observations, observation of student and/or parent conferences, self-evaluation, and annual goal setting
Collaborates with the Director of Upper Elementary regarding materials and classroom practices
Reviews curriculum in collaboration with the Director of Upper Elementary and/or the entire Upper Elementary team
Communicates and collaborates with the Director of Upper Elementary and the Head of School as required, regarding student and parent-related issues
Communicates and works cooperatively with parents, administrators, and student support staff concerning the emotional and physical well-being of students
Attends school, community, and/or parent education events as detailed in the Employee Handbook or as assigned by the Director of Upper Elementary
Interviews and hosts prospective students, completing all related paperwork within 24 hours
Outline duties and responsibilities of the Upper Elementary Academic Coach at the beginning of each academic year, updating as necessary to meet the individual needs of students in the classroom
Conducts weekly meetings with the Upper Elementary Academic Coach to discuss the individual needs of the students and the classroom environment in general, and determine if changes are needed
Attends and actively participates in Upper Elementary team meetings, curriculum meetings, and other meetings as assigned
Commits to professional development and best practices in Montessori and IB education
Complies with the content of the Employee Handbook for all duties not listed
Adheres to the behaviors described in the Alcuin Standards of Faculty Excellence
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Upper Elementary, and/or Head of School
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Maintains classroom inventory and submits to the Director of Upper Elementary at the end of each academic school year
Completes bus drivers' training and drives students in an Alcuin school bus as required
Mentors new Upper Elementary Guides or Upper Elementary Academic Coach as required
Conducts meetings with room parents to discuss weekly classroom newsletters, class parties, classroom-related activities, and to welcome new families
Shares classroom pictures of the students with the Yearbook committee in compliance with the information received from the Office of Advancement
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Required:
Ability to provide documents verifying authorization to work in the U.S.
Must pass Criminal Background Checks, Drug Testing, and Reference Check
Bachelor’s Degree
Montessori 6-12 Diploma (AMI Preferred)
3 years Montessori Upper Elementary/IB classroom teaching experience
Strong Interpersonal skills
Working knowledge of the Microsoft Suite of products
Ability to interact and communicate professionally with colleagues, students, parents, and others in the school community and during off-campus school related activities
Ability to function as a team with colleagues and the Director of Upper Elementary, and with other administrators as required
Preferred:
5 years Montessori Upper Elementary/IB classroom teaching experience
