Crane Country Day School is a co-educational Kindergarten-8th grade independent day school located on a beautiful 12-acre campus in Montecito, CA. Crane is dedicated to providing an experiential education characterized by a thoughtful balance of academic challenge and creative expression. We thrive as a community that builds character and confidence while celebrating the joy of learning. At Crane, we understand that how we teach is just as important as what we teach. It is a welcoming and supportive place to work—a rich environment where you will find enthusiastic cooperation, healthy relationships with colleagues, and active professional development.
The Role
Crane Country Day School seeks a versatile and collaborative Upper School Math Teacher to fill a one-year leave replacement position. We are looking for an educator who views mathematics not as a series of rote procedures, but as a language for exploration. This one-year position may be extended beyond June 30, 2027.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable stepping into a high-functioning department to deliver a curriculum that balances rigorous academic challenge with a deep commitment to student well-being. This role is particularly exciting as our 6th-grade program transitions to the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum, a shift that reinforces our belief that "doing deepens discovery" through problem-based learning and student-led inquiry.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teach four sections of Middle School Math, including one section of 8th Grade, two sections of 7th Grade (Pre-Algebra/Algebra) and co-teaching one section of 6th Grade.
Successfully implement a new 6th-grade math curriculum, ensuring lessons and assessments align with departmental learning goals and Crane’s experiential philosophy.
Incorporate educational technology thoughtfully to enhance student engagement and coursework.
Design and deliver lessons that support diverse learners, ensuring deep conceptual understanding for students at all skill levels.
Utilize both formative and summative assessment practices to provide timely, meaningful feedback that guides student progress.
Maintain consistent records of student growth and provide clear, professional updates to families via the learning management system and conferences.
Foster a classroom culture where all students feel seen and valued, and where risk-taking and collaboration are celebrated as essential to mathematical growth.
Serve as an advisor for approximately ten students, acting as the primary point of contact for their families and supporting their holistic academic and social-emotional development.
Participate fully in the life of the school, including Staffulty meetings, community events, annual Upper School Trip Week and assigned duties such as recess, lunch coverage, assemblies, and class trips.
Partner with "Staffulty" members to support student growth and participate in purposeful pedagogy meetings to ensure a cohesive student experience.
Utilize professional development opportunities to refine pedagogical skills and mathematical knowledge.
Maintain consistent, professional communication with students, families, and colleagues to enhance student development.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Upper School and/or Head of School to support the operational and mission-driven needs of the campus.
Requirements and Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject matter is required. An advanced degree or teaching credential/certificate preferred.
A minimum of three years or more of teaching experience.
A candidate with fluency in a language other than English, preferably Spanish, is desirable but not required.
Physical and Other Requirements
Prolonged periods of standing and walking in the classroom and throughout the campus
Occasionally lift 15-45 pounds
Regularly sit and stand on the floor throughout the day, and bend, kneel, or squat to be at eye level with children
Work in person on-site
Background investigation required via Live Scan.
TB assessment required for employment in CA schools.
Work Environment
Crane Country Day School is an equal-opportunity employer. We strongly encourage applications from people of color, LGBTQ+ educators, and educators from historically underrepresented communities in independent schools. Crane is committed to sustaining a diverse and inclusive community where each member is respected and valued.
Crane Country Day School, ideally located in the small seaside village of Montecito, is just 90 minutes north of Los Angeles and 5 minutes south of Santa Barbara. Crane is the oldest independent school in the area, having just launched its 85th anniversary celebration. It is a co-educational day school serving 250 children. The Lower School (grades K-5) and the Upper School (grades 6-8) are both located on the same sprawling yet cozy 11-acre campus that is one of the school's best-known attributes. Honoring its founder's vision, Crane School is dedicated to providing an experiential education characterized by a thoughtful balance of academic challenge and creative expression. We thrive as a community that builds character and confidence, while celebrating the joy in learning.
