The Department of Art History invites applications for the Hannah and Edward W. Carter postdoctoral fellow in Early Modern European Art (1400-1750) for a Ph.D. whose work focuses on European early modern art and ecological questions. The two-year position begins October 1, 2026. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have received their Ph.D. after January 1, 2019. International applicants are welcome. The fellow will be responsible for obtaining a visa, if required, as well as accommodation, travel, and all living expenses.
The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be a scholar who has demonstrated evidence of innovative methodologies. A successful applicant will conceive of Europe within a broader global context and be conversant with scholars across disciplines and geographies. It may be an asset if the applicant's research aligns with the goals of Making Green Worlds: Early Modern Art and Ecologies of Globalization.
The successful applicant will contribute intellectually to the department as well as to its mission by teaching one undergraduate course during each academic year, if needed, in a topic close to their area of research or an area of early modern art history to be determined by the department. The incumbent will also work with a faculty mentor on research and professional development.
The Fellow will join the vibrant research and academic communities within the Art History Department and the Center for 17th- and 18th-Century Studies and the William Andrews Center for Clark Memorial Library. He/she/they will have the following responsibilities and opportunities: develop their research agenda while participating regularly in Department and Center academic events; work collaboratively with a diverse group of scholars, graduate students, and other postdoctoral fellows and visiting researchers; co-organize and contribute to an interdisciplinary conference at the Clark Library and Center in the second year.
