Description
Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking internal applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Commercial Truck Driving Assistant Professor at the Walla Walla campus. The start date is at the beginning of the Summer Quarter in July 2026.

The faculty and staff at WWCC are a dedicated and innovative group of people focused on student success. WWCC faculty members are professional educators with the primary responsibility of providing a quality education for all WWCC students. Faculty use a variety of strategies and technologies to reach the wide range of students enrolled at WWCC. We are seeking a creative and dynamic individual with appropriate academic training and/or work experience in the field. Graduates of the Commercial Truck Driving program should plan to enter the workforce with the knowledge and skills to maneuver large vehicles on crowded streets and in highway traffic, as well as learn to inspect trucks and freight for compliance with regulations. The program provides the mandatory training for the Washington State Commercial Truck Driving License requirements for both new and renewing drivers.

Essential Functions:
The successful candidate will be responsible for building and maintaining current curriculum, preparing appropriate lectures, conducting lab exercises, evaluating and assessing student learning and assigning final grades to the students enrolled in the assigned course(s) and consulting with students as required by the instructional division. If selected for an interview you will be expected to present a 15-minute teaching moment on an assigned topic.
Teaching includes both teaching and teaching-related activities. Teaching-related activities encompass classroom preparation; advising; curriculum development; textbook orders; grading; student outcomes assessment, development, and implementation; and availability during posted office hours. Specific responsibilities include:
Develop, prepare, and teach Washington State compliant and College-approved Commercial Truck Driving courses including but not limited to courses addressing:
Pre-trip inspection
Straight back, off set back, and 90 degree back
Proper gear usage and recover/shifting procedures
Coupling and uncoupling
Starting/stopping
Procedures for turning
Procedures for entering intersections
Railroad crossing procedures
Demonstrate road test procedures
Legal aspects of obtaining and maintaining CDL License
Monitor student progress during on-road driving time.
Maintain safe vehicle operations at all times.
Utilize available technology appropriate to assignments.
Communicate expectations through appropriate instructional means to students with a wide variety of abilities.
Evaluate student progress and provide feedback.
Advise and mentor students on entrance requirements, program options, career plans, and graduation requirements.
Participate in district, division, or general faculty meetings; in-service training; curriculum development; professional development activities; academic consulting; workshops or seminars; service on district or college councils or committees, or other activities with the scope of the position.
Complies with WWCC policy, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statute and collective bargaining agreements.
Complies with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follows established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, office support, safety and health issues and related administrative processes.
Participate in outreach activities to promote the CDL program.
Participate in commencement ceremonies, wearing academic robes, unless excused by the President.
Support and advance the WWCC strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned.

Design curriculum, assignments, and performance-based exercises that align state and federal regulations for CDL holders.

Ensure students have technological and digital literacy skills needed for success at university level academic institutions or professional-technical work occupations.

Additional Competencies
A passion for instruction of commercial truck driving and the mission of the two-year college and a demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the mission, values, goals and objectives of WWCC.
A willingness to adapt to the changing needs of students, the college, and teaching methodologies. A strong interest and preferably demonstrated experience in using technology in teaching, including ability to teach or experience in teaching online courses.
The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution, community and technical college system.
Demonstrated ability and strong commitment to working with persons from diverse backgrounds.
A demonstrated understanding and value for the contributions that a diverse workforce can make to the success of the organization and the students served from a variety of cultural, ethnic, gender, age, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.
Ability to remain calm under heavy stress.
Qualifications: Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the college.
Possession of a valid commercial driver's license and five (5) years of experience driving with a CDL Class A License without air brake restriction and without automatic transmission restriction.
Ten (10) years driving abstract with no violations in the past three (3) years.
Preferred Qualifications
Master CDL Instructor certification.
Documented satisfactory completion of a Trade School certified in commercial truck driving preparation.
Demonstrated knowledge of CDL state and federal laws and Washington State traffic laws.
Experience teaching at a community college; teaching in a variety of modalities: In-person, web- or technology-enhanced, hybrid or online as needed.
Bilingual in English/Spanish.

Conditions/Terms of Employment
The College has a negotiated faculty salary schedule. Employee placement on the schedule is determined by education level and experience. Salary is dependent on the number of days of the contract and the candidate's placement on the negotiated faculty salary schedule. Initial placement is generally $87,969 - $100,287 for a standard 212-day contract, dependent on qualifications (additional compensation for doctorate degree). The placement does not include a potential COLA (cost of living adjustment) effective 7/1/2026. The College has a comprehensive faculty benefit program including medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance; paid sick leave; and retirement and two optional deferred compensation programs. All full-time employees will automatically have 3% of taxable income deferred into the State of Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). The college also supports faculty professional development. Walla Walla Community College requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary.
