Job Purpose:
The Principal Transportation Planner support work streams for the Executive Director of Stanford Transportation. Specifically, the Principal Transportation Planner lead efforts directly related to the StanfordNext project and support other special projects that would bring efficiencies to the Stanford Transportation department. Overall, this position plays a crucial role in enhancing the mobility and accessibility of the university campus, contributing to a better overall experience for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position would report directly to the Executive Director of Transportation.
What you will do in this role:
Lead feasibility analysis and implementation of complex transportation-related projects, including land use development projects such as StanfordNext, and long-range plans related to Marguerite, bike facilities, and general circulation on main campus, Redwood City, Stanford Research Park, Stanford Shopping Center, and other Stanford properties,
Direct transportation analysis including managing the consultants to demonstrate that the university can make regulatory requirements, monitor compliance related to transportation demand, mode split, transit performance, and regulatory/policy changes; synthesize findings into recommendations and briefings for leadership to inform program direction, phasing, and commitments.
Resolve cross-functional issues by convening campus partners and external agencies to align on feasible program requirements, timelines, and responsibilities. Oversee the interpretation, implementation and compliance with policies and regulations. Recommend actions and/or resolve complex issues that often span organizational boundaries.
Advise senior leadership on compliance strategies (e.g., trip cap management approaches, monitoring methodology, mitigation commitments) and recommend actions to address gaps or risks.
Develop long-term transportation plans and communication strategies that align with the university's objectives, considering sustainability, accessibility, and community needs. This includes working closely with the Transportation Operations team to assess option viability.
Evaluate and create policies related to campus transportation, including parking management, public transit partnerships, and alternative transportation initiatives, that align with Stanford's regulatory, sustainability and affordability goals.
Conduct analysis and projections of future transportation infrastructure, program and service needs. Serve on planning teams for new and renovated campus facilities, road and major events.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a broad variety of public and private agencies providing transportation services as well as agencies and officials involved in local and regional transportation planning efforts.
Represent the university transportation system to other university partners, leadership, students and the adjacent communities, and agencies acting as the subject matter expert for Stanford Transportation. This includes presenting analysis, representing commitments, and incorporating stakeholder input.
Develop, direct and manage outreach strategies related to transportation planning projects, including building internal and external relationships and communicating with internal and external communities.
Establish and maintain institutional policy required to implement the transportation program or ensure compliance with other university policy or outside regulation and regulators.
Prepare reports and official documents in support of Stanford Transportation objectives and priorities, ensuring inclusion of perspectives of internal and external constituencies and other affected parties.
Develop multi-year cost estimates and forecasts and program costs as plans advance, analyze variances transportation programs, including scenario modeling and funding/offset options (e.g., parking pricing). Monitor projected and financial risks and provide regular budget summaries and recommendations to leadership.
Provide day-to-day direction and functional oversight to consultants and Transportation technical staff, including setting workplans, defining deliverables, reviewing technical products for quality/compliance, tracking schedules, and coordinating inputs across contributors to support implementation.

To be successful in this role you must bring:
Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
A graduate degree is preferred, with a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience.
Must have a strong background in transportation planning, including transit, parking, bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicle mobility.
Ability to formulate and manage the implementation of policies and manage a variety of stakeholders, prior experience managing long-range planning projects for a university and the confidence to tackle difficult issues and resolve competing interests are a must.
Familiarity with regional transportation systems and agencies is essential and required.
Must possess excellent communication, research, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion.
Must be adept at working collaboratively across various university departments, consultants, and stakeholders, and capable of building consensus in a decentralized environment.
Must have demonstrated leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate constituencies which could span multiple organizational boundaries.
Strong analytical and conceptual skills are required, along with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-expectation setting.
Must be a proactive self-starter with proven leadership and team coordination experience.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required; familiarity with presentation and design tools such as PowerPoint or Photoshop is a plus.

Pay Range:
The expected pay range for this position is $181,914 to $231,158 per annum.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
