SAVAHCS in Tucson - AZ is hiring for a Supervisory Health Technician (Ophthalmology) to serve in our Surgical Care line. Health Technicians in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) support Ophthalmologists and Optometrists in the eye clinic as part of the Surgical Care Line (SCL) providing a wide variety of clinical work and administrative duties.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English Experience and Education: (1) Experience: One year of experience in a health care field - such as but not limited to nursing - medical assistant - or health technician
OR (2) Education: Two years above high school with a minimum of six semester hours directly related to a health care field or associate's degree in a health care related degree
OR (3) Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying
Examples are listed below: (a) Six months of experience in the health care field
and one year above high school OR (b) Six months of experience in the health care field and successful completion of a course for health care technicians - hospital corpsmen - medical service specialists - or ophthalmology technicians given by the U.S. Armed Forces OR (c) Six months of experience in the health care field and completion of an independent study course in Ophthalmic Medical Assisting
Certification: All applicants must be certified as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) with the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
The COA certification is JCAHPO's entry-level certification examination for a Health Technician (Ophthalmology)
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria)
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment - the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates
Experience of one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-9)
Demonstrated Knowledge - Skills - and Abilities (KSA): In addition to meeting the all KSAs for the GS-10 grade level - the candidate must demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSA designated by an asterisk (*)

Ability to work independently to set priorities - delegate tasks - meet multiple deadlines - analyze organizational problems - and develop and implement effective solutions to optimize quality - efficiency - performance - and productivity within the service

Duties
Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The Supervisory Health Technician is responsible for the supervision - administrative management - and direction of eye clinic staff
May be delegated administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the eye clinic staff activities including resident and student orientation
Has full supervisory responsibility over nonsupervisory health technicians and other ancillary staff such as Medical Support Assistants
Duties Include: Plans and carries out examinations in line with training and accepted practices
Independently makes recommendations about clinical situations - procedures or changes to procedures in some situations
Preventative measures used to recognize conditions that cause erroneous results or creates dangerous situations
Independently troubleshoot clinic problems and complex instruments
Provides patients consistent information according to established policies and procedures
Handles conflict and veteran complaints constructively and appropriately
Collaborates with other health care staff in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care
Maintains confidentiality of patient medical records according to policy
Stays current with required training related to customer service and interpersonal skills
Uses word processing software to execute several office automation functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files
